A Night Divided
Acceptable with guidance. Age: 10+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
A tense, clean story about a family that loves freedom more than safety under a regime that watches everyone. Courage, loyalty and family love drive it, and it teaches real history well. The reservations: Gerta lies and steals often and weighs whether that is justified, and she turns away from prayer and leaves her Bible behind.
For parents
Read aloud from 9, independent reading from 10. Common Sense Media and Kirkus say 9 and up. Ask whether lying to the secret police is the same as lying to a friend, and what the Church teaches (CCC 2482-2486). Ask why Gerta stops praying, and what prayer might have given her.
