A Quiet Place
Recommended. Age: 18+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.
Our review
A family lives on a farm where monsters hunt anything that makes a sound. So they walk barefoot, talk with their hands, and stay very quiet. The mom and dad do everything they can to keep their children safe. It is a very scary movie made for grown-ups. This is a horror film about a mother and father who will give anything for their children, including a baby not yet born. The family prays grace in silence and the father's last act is one of love. There is no bad language and no sexual content. The fear is intense, a small child dies early on, and there is a bloody birth scene.
For parents
The Catholic classification is A-III, adults. Common Sense Media says 14+ and Greydanus says Teens & Up, so a parent may decide a mature older teen can handle it, but preview it first. The death of the youngest child in the opening minutes is the hardest moment. Things to talk about: the couple welcome a new baby in a world where a cry can kill. Why do they choose life anyway? The father tells his daughter he has always loved her just before he dies for her. Ask: how does Regan misread her father, and what changes? What does the silent grace before the meal tell you about this family? What makes a home worth defending?
