Abandonment to Divine Providence

1861 · Jean-Pierre de Caussade, S.J. · Spiritual classic, letters and treatise

Recommended. Age: 16+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

Caussade's point is simple and freeing: God's will is in the present moment, in ordinary duty and in what we cannot change. Jeff Mirus of Catholic Culture commends it for religious and lay people alike. The reservation is that surrender can be misread as passivity. Read it alongside the sacraments and the duties of your state, never instead of them.

For parents

For adults, and a good book for a tired mother or father. Not a read-aloud. Older teens can read the short treatise from about 16. Ask: what is the duty of this present moment for me? How is trusting God's providence different from giving up or doing nothing?
