The Adventures of Robin Hood

1938 · Michael Curtiz and William Keighley · Swashbuckler adventure

Recommended. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

This is the great family adventure, and its heart is sound. Robin risks everything for the poor and stays loyal to his rightful king. He treats Marian with honor, and their love is chaste. The one reservation is a bishop who sides with the usurper. Tell your children that bad churchmen exist and that the Church is still holy.

For parents

Good for ages eight and up. Expect constant sword fights, deaths by arrow and hanging, and a brief assault on a woman. Ask: why does Robin stay loyal to Richard when it costs him his lands? Is taking back what was stolen from the poor the same as stealing? Does one bad bishop make the Church bad?
