Animal Farm

Our review
A loose, comic take on Orwell that still lands his main warning: power without truth turns into tyranny. Boxer the horse gives himself for others, even an enemy, and young Lucky repents and asks forgiveness. The reservations are real. A donkey preaches that life has no meaning, death is pictured as going to the stars, and the toilet jokes never stop.
For parents
Best for ages 10 and up with a parent nearby, since Boxer's fate and the flood may upset younger children. Ask: how did Napoleon change the rules, and why did the others go along? Then correct two things: life has meaning because God made us, and we hope for heaven, not the stars (CCC 1023-1024).
