Astrid the Unstoppable

2018 · Maria Parr · Middle-grade family story (translated from Norwegian)

Recommended. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A joyful, snowy book with a big heart. Astrid loves her old godfather fiercely, and the story turns on mending a broken bond between a father and his grown daughter. Righting old wrongs, loving family and doing hard things for others carry it. God is not named. The reservation is small: the daughter was born out of wedlock, and animals die along the way.

For parents

Read aloud from 6, independent reading from 8. Redeemed Reader suggests a family read-aloud from 6; Kirkus says 8 to 12. Heidi was born outside marriage, which the book mentions briefly. Ask why it was hard for Gunnvald and Heidi to forgive each other. Ask what a godparent is for, and pray for yours.
