Babette's Feast
Recommended. Age: 13+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.
Our review
Pope Francis called this his favorite film, and it is easy to see why. Babette gives everything she has, and the gift heals old grudges, old sins, and old fears. The meal works the way grace works: it is received, not earned. The one honest note: the setting is a Protestant sect, so the Eucharist is an image here, not the real thing. Say so.
For parents
Slow, subtitled, and wonderful for teens and up (A-II; Common Sense says 12+). Only content note: the guests get tipsy and a serving boy sneaks wine. Ask: why does Babette spend it all? Then read Psalm 85:10 together, the verse the General quotes.
