Becket

1964 ยท Historical drama

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 13+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

This is a story of grace catching a man by surprise. Becket takes the bishop's office as a political favor and finds that God wants all of him. His conversion is sincere, his stand against the king is real, his death true martyrdom. Burton and O'Toole are magnificent. One reservation: the film invents a dissolute young Becket, and its source play treats his faith more as honor than love.

For parents

Teens and up. Pre-conversion scenes imply mistresses and a bedroom tryst, nothing shown. Ask your teens: why does Henry feel betrayed when Becket chooses God? Where does the real Thomas Becket differ from this one? Use it to teach why the Church must be free of the state (CCC 2244-2246).
