Betsy-Tacy

1940 · Maud Hart Lovelace · Early chapter book, historical friendship story

Recommended. Age: 7+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

Two little girls love each other well, and the adults around them are kind and firm. That is rare and worth handing to a child. Tacy's family is Irish Catholic and is drawn with affection. The one reservation is the chapter where Tacy's baby sister dies. It is gentle, but a reader reports that Betsy's five-year-old picture of heaven is not sound teaching.

For parents

Read aloud from 5, independent reading from 7 or 8. Stop after book four at this age, as Good Books for Catholic Kids advises. After the Baby Bee chapter, ask what Betsy got right about heaven and what the Church really teaches about a baptized baby who dies (CCC 1023).
