Blade Runner 2049
Caution. Age: 18+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.
Our review
The most theologically interesting secular film Lumen has reviewed: its entire plot runs on the premise that birth, not manufacture, is the miracle worth dying for -- a Catholic project reads it as affirming the sanctity of procreation with God, and even its violence is framed as defilement of the created. Against that: female nudity, an implied sex scene, commodified sexuality throughout, and a bleak world with no God in it. The L classification has it right: adults, with discernment.
For parents
Adults only. Three conversations worth having: the film's engine is that a child conceived and born outweighs everything manufactured -- JPII's theology of procreation arriving via secular sci-fi. Joi is the counterfeit of love: purchased companionship that only flatters, versus love that costs something. And K's ending is Jn 15:13 in the snow. The caution is real too: even where the film critiques commodified sexuality, it shows what it critiques.
