Brambly Hedge: Spring Story

1980 · Jill Barklem · Picture book, animal story

Recommended. Age: 7+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A whole village of mice stops work to make one small boy's birthday glad. The story is slight. The good in it is a community where neighbors know each other, share what they have and feast together. The paintings are the real reason to own it. The one reservation is that the book has no faith content at all.

For parents

Read aloud from 3. Independent reading from about 7. Best for children who like to pore over pictures. Ask how many mice helped with Wilfred's party, and why they kept it secret. Ask whom your family could surprise with a kindness this week.
