Clementine

2006 · Sara Pennypacker · Early chapter book, realistic family comedy

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 7+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

This is a funny, clean book about a girl whose good intentions keep landing her in trouble. Its heart is a patient mother and father who love their child when she is hardest to love. That is a true picture of family. The one reservation: her impulsive mischief is played for laughs, so a child may need help seeing where she was wrong.

For parents

Read it aloud from 5, independent reading from 7. Common Sense Media says 7 and up and notes it works as a read-aloud for kindergartners. Ask why Clementine thought her parents might give her away, and how they showed her otherwise. Ask what she did to make things right with Margaret.
