Dekalog

1989 · Krzysztof Kieślowski · Drama (ten-part Polish television series)

Caution. Age: 18+. A Catholic review of this show for parents.

Our review

Kieslowski asks what the Ten Commandments cost real people, and he takes sin and its wounds seriously. For a formed adult it can be a strong examination of conscience. The reservation is real. The director was not a believer, the stories show adultery, voyeurism, a long and brutal murder and a wrecked altar without a clear moral ending, and episode six carries sexual imagery that Catholic reviewers warn about.

For parents

Adults only. Not for family viewing or for teens. Skip episode six, which shows a voyeur and a sexual encounter. Watch one film at a time with the commandment in front of you. Ask: which commandment was broken here, and what did it cost? Where would confession and grace have changed this story?
