Our review
A bright, clean Disney musical whose best thread is forgiveness. Red apologizes to the people she hurt, Max forgives the girls and hopes his father can change, and the children of villains get a second chance. The magic is fairy-tale magic. The problem is the songs: Plugged In notes several lyrics telling kids to make their own rules and follow their hearts, and children sing what they hear.
For parents
Clean enough for kids eight and up, but the songs need a parent's word. Little ones may fear the man-eating flower and shadow monsters. Expect flirting and hand-holding, no swearing. Ask: who said sorry in this story, and why did it matter? When a song says to follow your heart, ask: where do we learn what is right?
