Endless Night

1967 · Agatha Christie · Psychological crime novel

Caution. Age: 16+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

This is Christie's darkest book and a true picture of what greed does to a soul. The curse is a fraud the killer paid for. The evil is his own choice, and a dying friend cries out that he should have gone the other way. At the end he sees what he threw away. That is a moral reckoning for the reader. The reservation: he kills again, his mind breaks, and nobody speaks of repentance or mercy.

For parents

Not a read-aloud. A mature teen can read it alone from 16. The narrator is a murderer, and he ends in despair with no word of mercy. Ask where Mike could have turned back. Ask whether anyone is born to endless night, or whether God gives every person the grace to choose (CCC 1037). Fortune telling is forbidden (CCC 2116).
