For Greater Glory

2012 · Historical war drama

Recommended. Age: 18+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

The heart of this film is a boy. Blessed José Sánchez del Río is tortured and shot for refusing to deny Christ, and the film shows it with reverence. Around him is an old-fashioned war epic with real Masses, real martyrs, and priests who forgive their killers. The honest reservation: it treats armed revolt as simply holy and cleans up a priest who was not. Adults only for the violence.

For parents

For adults and mature older teens who can take graphic war violence, including a child's torture. Ask: José could have saved his life by renouncing his faith. Why didn't he? Then ask when a Catholic may take up arms against a persecutor; CCC 2243 gives the Church's strict conditions.
