Francis of Assisi

1961 · Michael Curtiz · Biographical religious epic

Acceptable with guidance. Age: All ages. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

This is a sincere, respectful life of Saint Francis. It shows him give up wealth, obey the pope, and love poverty for Christ. The Catholic News Service rated it for all ages. The reservation is accuracy. The script mixes history with invention, including a love triangle around Clare and a soldier, and it only skims the depth of Francis's prayer.

For parents

For the whole family, per the A-I classification. There is some sword fighting, nothing graphic. Tell your children the rivalry over Clare is made up. Ask: why did Francis give everything away? What did obeying the pope cost him? Then read a real life of the saint together.
