Going My Way

1944 · Leo McCarey · Musical comedy drama

Recommended. Age: All ages. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

This is a happy picture of parish priests as fathers to their people. Father O'Malley corrects no one with a lecture. He wins boys off the street with a choir, and he honors the old pastor while doing the hard work for him. The one reservation is that the faith stays in the background. You see kindness and service, and you hear very little about Christ or the sacraments.

For parents

For the whole family. It is slow and gentle, so small children may drift. A young couple is suspected of living together, and they marry. Ask: how does Father O'Malley help Father Fitzgibbon without hurting his pride? Why does a priest give up marriage, and what does he gain?
