Hadestown: The Musical
Acceptable with guidance. Age: 13+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.
Our review
This is superb theater on film, and its heart is real: love that goes into the dark after the beloved, a hard ruler softened by mercy, and a marriage of gods mended. But the world is pagan, hope rests on a song, and the story ends in loss and starts over. Persephone's heavy drinking is played as fun, and the lovers' union is implied with no wedding.
For parents
Best for teens, watched with a parent. Common Sense Media says 10 and up; Lumen says 13 for the drinking and the implied union. Ask: why does Orpheus turn around? What does doubt cost him? Where does our hope rest when a story ends in loss? Compare Orpheus with Christ, who went down to the dead and rose.
