Heidi

1881 · Johanna Spyri · Children's classic; realistic fiction

Recommended. Age: 9+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

Heidi is a book about trusting God when His answer is slow. A grandmother teaches her to pray, and Heidi learns that God gave her something better than what she asked for. She reads the Prodigal Son to her bitter grandfather, and he prays again and goes back to church. The one reservation is length. The pace is slow for modern readers.

For parents

Read aloud from 6. Independent reading from 9, which matches Common Sense Media. Ask why God did not answer Heidi's prayer right away, and what she got instead. Ask why the Prodigal Son story changed her grandfather. Catholic families can connect his return to Confession.
