Homer Price

1943 · Robert McCloskey · Humorous small-town stories

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

These six stories show a sensible, helpful boy in a town where adults are foolish in harmless ways. Homer solves problems by thinking and by being useful to his neighbors. The one reservation is that this is comedy first and formation second, with period touches a parent should explain, like boys dressed as Indians and a pageant joke about Indians.

For parents

Read aloud from 6, independent reading from 8 or 9. Memoria Press assigns it in fourth grade. Ask how Homer stays calm when the grown-ups panic over the doughnuts. Ask what Freddy learns about his comic-book hero, and who is a real hero worth copying.
