Our review
The Iron Giant is a Cold War fable with a sacrificial heart. A machine built to kill learns from a boy that he can choose who he is, and he chooses to die so a town may live. The ending is deliberately shaped like resurrection. Two things to frame: Hogarth's talk of souls is a child's guess, not catechism, and there is mild cursing and some rude humor.
For parents
Kids and up; Common Sense Media says six plus, Plugged In would wait longer for the language. Ask: what does Hogarth mean when he says souls don't die, and who has one? Is it wrong to hunt a deer? Why does the Giant choose Superman over the gun?
