Joseph: King of Dreams
Recommended. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.
Our review
Joseph is his father's favorite son, and his brothers are jealous. They sell him as a slave in Egypt. God stays with Joseph, and years later he forgives his brothers and saves his family from hunger. This is a faithful, gentle telling of the Joseph story that parents can hand to school-age children as true. God is plainly the one at work, and forgiveness is the point. Expect some frightening dream images and a brief, discreet scene with Potiphar's wife.
For parents
Best at about seven or eight and up. Common Sense Media says 8+ and Greydanus says Kids & Up. Little ones may be scared by the dream of wolves, the pit, the slave market and the prison rats. Potiphar's wife grabs at Joseph and then lies about him. It is brief, and it is a good moment to praise Joseph for running from sin. Read Genesis 37 to 45 alongside it and note what the film adds: a bigger part for Asenath and a changed timing for Benjamin's birth. Ask: why were the brothers jealous? How did God bring good out of the wrong they did? Was it hard for Joseph to forgive?
