Keeper of the Lost Cities

2012 · Shannon Messenger · Middle-grade fantasy

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 10+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A fast, popular fantasy with loyal friends, kind adoptive parents and a heroine who owns up when she cheats. The elves' powers are framed as natural gifts of their race, not occult practice. The reservations are its view of humans as reckless and lesser, and a mystery that Sophie may have been made by a secret group. Both deserve a parent's word.

For parents

Read aloud from 8. A child can read it alone from about 10. Common Sense Media says 9 and up. Ask why Sophie confessed to stealing the test. Ask what makes a person valuable, if it is not powers or talent. Tell your child every child is a gift from God, however they came to be.
