Lay Siege to Heaven

1960 · Louis de Wohl · Historical novel, saint biography

Recommended. Age: 15+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

De Wohl makes Saint Catherine of Siena a living person. She prays, fasts, serves the sick, and speaks hard truth to the pope out of love for the Church. Teens see that a saint can fight for a wounded Church without leaving it. The reservation: this is a novel with invented dialogue, and Good Books for Catholic Kids notes mild sexual content across de Wohl's books.

For parents

Independent reading from 15 or 16, which is the Seton grade 10 placement. Not a read-aloud for younger children. Remind your teen the conversations are invented around real events. Ask how Catherine can rebuke a pope and still obey him. Ask what her fasting and visions were for.
