The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

1950 · C. S. Lewis · Children's fantasy

Recommended. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

This is the Gospel told as a fairy tale. Edmund betrays his family, the law demands his death, and Aslan dies in his place and rises. Children feel the weight of sin and the joy of mercy before they can explain either. The one reservation is that Aslan's death on the Stone Table is cruel and sad, and may be too much for a young or tender child.

For parents

Read aloud from 6 or 7. Independent reading from 8 or 9. Common Sense Media says 8+. Ask why Aslan had to die for Edmund when Edmund was the guilty one. Then open the Gospel and read the Passion and Easter morning together.
