Little Women

1933 · George Cukor · Period family drama

Recommended. Age: All ages. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

The March girls give their Christmas breakfast to a hungry family and are happier for it. That scene is the film in small: goodness is learned at home, through small acts and a mother's steady hand. Katharine Hepburn's Jo is a joy. The reservation is only that Beth's illness will sadden tender children, and the 1933 pacing asks for patience.

For parents

Fine for all ages and best from about seven, when children can follow the story. Prepare tender hearts for Beth's illness. Ask: what did the sisters give up on Christmas morning, and what did they gain? Which fault does each sister have to conquer?
