Little Women

1868 · Louisa May Alcott · Family coming-of-age novel

Recommended. Age: 11+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

Few novels show the daily work of becoming good as well as this one. The sisters fight their faults by name, serve poor neighbors, and learn from a patient, wise mother. Marriage and home are honored. The one reservation is that the faith here is Protestant and moral. There is no Church and no sacraments, only effort and Scripture.

For parents

Read aloud from 9, independent reading from 11 or 12. Good Books for Catholic Kids says 12 to 13 and Common Sense Media says 10 and up. Ask which sister's fault is most like your own. Ask where the Marches get help to change, and what Catholics have besides: Confession and the Eucharist. One line mocks a Jewish man's nose. Name it as wrong.
