Lord of the Flies
Acceptable with guidance. Age: 18+. A Catholic review of this show for parents.
Our review
A faithful, harrowing telling of a story about original sin. The beast the boys fear is inside them. Simon prays over the dead pilot, sees the truth, and is killed for it. Golding offers no grace beyond rescue, so hope is thin. The reservation is the violence: children kill children, and Piggy's death is slow and bloody.
For parents
For adults; it is rated TV-MA, and children kill children on screen. Simon's diary lingers on his feelings for Jack, which some read as a crush. Ask: why did the boys fall so fast without law and love? Where is grace missing on the island (CCC 405)?
