Mercy Watson to the Rescue

2005 · Kate DiCamillo · Early chapter book, animal humor

Acceptable. Age: 6+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

This is a silly, warm first chapter book about a pig and the couple who adore her. The heart of it is the safety a scared child feels with grown-ups who love her, and a happy ending where everyone shares toast with the neighbors. The one honest reservation is that Mercy is pure appetite, so the hero of the title is a joke, not a model.

For parents

Read aloud from 4, independent reading from 6. Common Sense Media says 5 and up and the publisher says 6 to 9. Ask your child whether Mercy really meant to rescue anyone. Ask who the real helpers were, and why the Watsons share their toast with everyone at the end.
