The Miracle Maker

2000 ยท Stop-motion animated life of Christ

Recommended. Age: 10+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

This movie tells the life of Jesus with puppets that move like real people. A sick girl named Tamar meets Jesus, and He brings her back to life. Jesus is shown as kind, strong and truly the Son of God. The scenes with evil spirits and the cross can be scary for little kids. It is best for older kids, about ten and up, with a parent. The Miracle Maker is the best children's film about Christ we know. It stays close to the Gospels and adds almost nothing. A few things are missing, most of all Our Lady at the foot of the cross, so fill those in yourself.

For parents

Kids and up per Decent Films; Common Sense Media says ten plus for the crucifixion and the possession scenes. Watch the Magdalene deliverance and the desert temptation with younger children. Supply what is missing: Mary stood by the cross (Jn 19:25 to 27, CCC 964), and the keys Jesus promised to Peter (Mt 16:18 to 19, CCC 552). Ask: why do the disciples on the road not know Jesus at first? See CCC 645. What did Jesus give us at the Last Supper? See CCC 1339.
