Modern Times

1936 · Charlie Chaplin · Silent comedy

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 6+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

Chaplin's comedy says a worker is a person and not a part in a machine, which is close to what the Church teaches about labor. The Tramp and the girl stay kind and hopeful with nothing. The reservation: he gets high on cocaine by accident and it is played as a gag, and stealing food is treated lightly.

For parents

Fine for the family, and children laugh at it. Before the jail scene, tell young kids the white powder is a dangerous drug. Ask: is it wrong for a starving girl to take bread? Why does the Tramp keep smiling? What makes work good for a person?
