Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle

1947 · Betty MacDonald · Humorous episodic children's fiction

Acceptable. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

These stories make bad habits look ridiculous, which is a fine way to teach a child. Selfishness, back talk and dawdling each get their natural reward, and every child ends up better and happier. Parents are loved and obeyed in the end. The one reservation is that the mothers and fathers are helpless until an outsider steps in, and later books add magic powders.

For parents

Read aloud from 5, independent reading from 8. Common Sense Media says 8 and up. Spanking is mentioned as a threat. Ask which cure your child would need. Ask why being selfish made the child in the story unhappy before anyone punished him.
