On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness

Our review

A funny, heartfelt Christian fantasy. Janner learns that loving his younger brother and sister means laying down his own wishes, and a mother and grandfather protect them at great cost. Characters pray to the Maker and praise him when help comes. The magic is wonder, not spellcraft. The reservation is violence: stabbings and a death that will frighten sensitive children.

For parents

Read aloud from 8, independent reading from 10. Plugged In says 8 and up; Kirkus 10 to 12. Sensitive readers should wait. Ask why Janner keeps protecting Tink and Leeli when it is hard (John 15:13). Ask who the Maker is like, and what the First Well might stand for.
