On the Waterfront

1954 · Elia Kazan · Crime drama

Recommended. Age: 13+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

A weak man finds his conscience, and a priest helps him find it. Father Barry takes the Gospel to the docks and stays there when it gets dangerous. Terry's choice to tell the truth costs him and frees him. The reservation is tone. The menace is constant, and a murder and street fights make this one for teens, not children.

For parents

For teens thirteen and up. Expect fistfights, a murder, and hard men making threats. Ask: why is it so hard for Terry to speak up? What does Father Barry risk by standing with the workers? When have you stayed quiet about a wrong, and what would courage have looked like?
