One Morning in Maine

1952 · Robert McCloskey · Picture book, family story

Recommended. Age: 7+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A whole book about one loose tooth and one happy family. Sal's father listens to her, works beside her, and takes her to town. She shares her wish with her little sister. It is ordinary life shown as a gift. One small note: Sal wishes on a tooth and a feather. That is a child's game, not superstition, but say so.

For parents

Read aloud from 3 or 4. Independent reading from about 7. It is long for a picture book, so plan two sittings for the youngest. Ask how Sal handles losing her tooth in the mud. Ask what her father does that shows he loves her.
