Orthodoxy

1908 · G. K. Chesterton · Christian apologetics, essays

Recommended. Age: 15+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

Orthodoxy is the happiest defense of the creed in English. Chesterton shows that wonder, gratitude, free will, and sanity all stand on Christian ground, and he does it laughing. The honest reservation: he wrote it as an Anglican, fourteen years before he entered the Church, so it defends the creed and says little about the papacy or the sacraments.

For parents

For teens and adults. Chesterton Schools Network assigns it in grade 10. Read aloud a chapter at a time from about 14; independent reading from 15 or 16. Ask: why does Chesterton say the madman has lost everything except his reason? What did the fairy tales teach him about gratitude?
