Out of the Silent Planet

Our review
Lewis imagines a world that never fell, and it makes our own fall visible. Ransom learns courage and humility among creatures without original sin. The villain's creed of conquest in the name of progress is answered firmly. The reservation: this is imaginative theology by an Anglican, with a spirit ruling the planet. Treat it as story, not catechism.
For parents
Read aloud from 11, independent reading from 13 or 14. Kolbe uses it in grades 7 and 8. A friend is shot and dies. Ask why Earth is called silent. Ask what Weston gets wrong when he says mankind must survive at any cost.
