Piecing Me Together
Acceptable with guidance. Age: 14+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
A strong, well-made novel about dignity, friendship and finding your voice. Jade's mother is devoted, Jade prays for others, and she learns to turn anger into art and service. But the book is aimed at teens and carries teen content: crude remarks about her body, a crude sexual joke, God's name misused, and small thefts and lies left uncorrected. Read it with your teen, not instead of them.
For parents
Independent reading from 14; not a read-aloud for younger children. Common Sense Media says 13 and up, Plugged In 14. Ask whether Jade was right to take food from the event, and what the seventh commandment asks. Ask what E.J. means when he says prayer will not help, and why Christians pray and act at once.
