Pride and Prejudice

1813 · Jane Austen · Classic novel of manners

Recommended. Age: 14+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

Austen's great comedy is about two people who must each admit a fault before they can love well. Darcy learns humility and Elizabeth learns to judge slowly. Marriage is treated as a serious good worth getting right. The one reservation is Lydia, who runs off and lives with Wickham before marriage and never repents, though the book shows the cost.

For parents

Independent reading from 14, as Common Sense Media and Good Books for Catholic Kids both say. A strong reader could share it aloud at 12. Ask what the book says a good marriage is built on. Ask what Lydia's choice cost her sisters and who paid for it.
