The Prince of Egypt
Recommended. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.
Our review
This movie tells how God sent Moses to free His people from slavery in Egypt. It shows God as real, strong and holy, and Moses learns to trust and obey Him. Some parts are sad and scary, like the plagues and the night the firstborn sons die. It is best for kids about eight and up, with a parent close by. The Prince of Egypt treats Exodus as true and treats God as God. The burning bush and the Red Sea are among the most reverent scenes in animation. It changes some details of Exodus, so read chapters 1 to 14 alongside it, and sit with younger children through the tenth plague.
For parents
Kids and up; Common Sense Media says eight plus, and Plugged In would hold back very young children. Read Exodus 1 to 14 first and let your kids spot the changes: Moses kills the Egyptian on purpose (Ex 2:12), and Aaron speaks for him. Ask: what name does God give Himself at the bush? See CCC 205 to 206. Why lamb's blood on the doors, and Who is our Passover Lamb? See CCC 608 and 1221 on the Red Sea and Baptism.
