Quo Vadis

1951 · Mervyn LeRoy · Historical epic

Recommended. Age: 6+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

Rome has power, wine and spectacle. The Christians have Christ, and they will not trade Him for their lives. That contrast is the heart of this epic, and the martyrs' courage is its best lesson. The reservation is length and a few hard scenes. A long suicide by a likable pagan, some innuendo and the arena call for a parent nearby.

For parents

For children about ten and up with a parent, and it runs nearly three hours. Preview the arena and the scene where Petronius and Eunice take their own lives. Ask: why would the Christians die before denying Jesus? What does Rome offer Marcus? Say plainly that taking one's own life is wrong.
