Ramona the Pest
Acceptable with guidance. Age: 7+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.
Our review
A small, funny, true book about a small child. Ramona is not bad. She is five, and she wants too much all at once. The grown-ups correct her with patience, and a teacher's kind letter brings her back after she sulks. That is a good picture of mercy for little ones. The one reservation: her back talk is played for laughs, so say plainly that it is not the goal.
For parents
Read it aloud from 5; most children read it alone by 7. Common Sense Media says 7 and up. Ask why Ramona pulls Susan's curls when she knows it is wrong. Ask how Miss Binney shows she still loves Ramona, and how God keeps loving us when we fail and come back (CCC 1439).
