Redwall

1986 · Brian Jacques · Animal fantasy adventure

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 10+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

Redwall is a stirring story of courage, hospitality and defending the weak. Good and evil are plain, and the hero grows from a clumsy novice into a protector of his home. The reservation is real. This abbey has monks, a habit and grace before meals, but no God, and the battles are bloody for a ten-year-old.

For parents

Read aloud from 9, independent reading from 10. Sensitive children should wait, since deaths are vivid. Ask what a real abbey is for and whom real monks pray to. Ask why Matthias fights: for glory, or to protect the weak?
