Sixty Saints for Boys

1948 · Joan Windham · Saint stories, collection

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A boy can find his own patron here and meet him as a real person. Windham shows that saints are not all one type and that holiness is more interesting than bad behavior. The one reservation is that she blends legend with fact, so these read as inspiring tales and not as careful history.

For parents

Read aloud from 6. Independent reading from 8 or 9, the age Good Books for Catholic Kids gives. Say up front that some details are legend built on a true holy life. Ask which saint shares your son's name, and what that saint did that took courage.
