Skylark

1994 · Patricia MacLachlan · Historical family fiction (chapter book)

Recommended. Age: 8+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

A quiet book about a family that holds together when the land dries up. Sarah chose this family, and the drought tests that choice. Anna learns that love can stretch across a long distance and still hold. It ends with rain, a reunion and a baby on the way, a gentle picture of hope and the goodness of marriage. The reservation: no content review exists, so a few details are unchecked.

For parents

Read it aloud from 6, and alone from 8. Kirkus says 8 to 12. The scary parts are a barn fire and a hard drought, told softly. Ask how the family stays a family while apart. Ask what we do while we wait for rain, or for anything, and why hope is a virtue.
