The Sound of Music

Our review
The best thing here is how the abbey is treated. The Reverend Mother will not let Maria hide behind convent walls from a hard question. She sends her out to find God's will, and says a wife's love is holy too. That is real vocation teaching, sung. The reservation is thinness: the family's Catholic life, and the priest who traveled with them, were cut for Hollywood. Still a family joy.
For parents
For ages six and up; the Nazi search is tense but bloodless. Ask: why does the Reverend Mother send Maria away from the abbey instead of letting her stay? Is marriage a calling from God too? CCC 1603 says yes. Then ask why the Captain tears down the flag.
