Sweep: The Story of a Girl and Her Monster

2018 · Jonathan Auxier · Middle-grade historical fantasy

Recommended. Age: 10+. A Catholic review of this book for parents.

Our review

This is a beautiful, sad and hopeful book about love that gives itself away. Charlie lays down his life for Nan, and Redeemed Reader sees in him an echo of Christ's sacrifice. It also tells the true story of climbing children and those who fought for them. The note: the golem is fairy-tale magic from Jewish legend, and the motto 'we are saved by saving others' needs a parent's word.

For parents

Read aloud from 9, independent reading from 10. Common Sense Media says 8 and up; Redeemed Reader says 10 to 15. Children burn and fall, and one boy dies. Ask why Charlie gave his life for Nan (John 15:13). Ask what 'saved by saving others' gets right, and who saves us first.
