Our review
A warm homage to the Little House books, set in a real New Deal farm colony. Terpsichore meets mud, cold and tents with work and good cheer, and the whole town pulls together. Her father would rather farm than take relief. The reservation: she bends the truth to get her family into the colony, and a parent should name that plainly.
For parents
Read aloud from 8, independent reading from 10. The publisher says 10 and up. A reader notes a brief mention of two children dying. Ask whether Terpsichore was right to stretch the truth to help her family (CCC 2485). Ask what makes a place feel like home.
