The Ten Commandments

1956 · Cecil B. DeMille · Biblical epic

Acceptable with guidance. Age: 9+. A Catholic review of this movie for parents.

Our review

DeMille's epic treats God's rescue of Israel with awe, and the Red Sea still astonishes. Moses is brave, humble and obedient. Watch it as a grand retelling, not as Scripture. The film adds a love triangle, leans on American talk of freedom more than worship, and numbers the commandments the Protestant way. Read Exodus alongside it.

For parents

Good for ages nine and up with a parent, in two sittings. The plagues, whippings and the golden calf scene can frighten small children. Ask: why did God free Israel, just to be free or to worship Him? Which parts are in Exodus and which did Hollywood add?
